How to Assign a Challenge to a Client
Learn how to assign a Challenge to a client within Identity Arc to establish a long-term objective that guides their progress and supports meaningful outcomes.
What this feature does
Assigning a Challenge within Identity Arc allows service providers to define a client’s long-term objective, creating a clear, outcome-focused foundation for their healing and progress journey. Once assigned, the Challenge becomes the anchor for related Goals and Tasks, providing structure, direction, and continuity across services while enabling measurable progress over time.
Challenges represent transformative achievements that often require sustained effort and ongoing support, such as securing stable housing, overcoming anxiety, or achieving employment.
Who can use this feature
- Organization Administrators – Can assign, edit, archive, and monitor Challenges.
- Team Members – Can assign and manage Challenges for clients assigned to them.
- Interns / Volunteers – May assign Challenges depending on organizational permissions.
- Law Enforcement / Advocates – Zero Access to Identity Arc.
- Clients – Can view assigned Challenges and any associated notes through the client-facing mobile app, promoting engagement and accountability.
Before you begin
Before assigning a Challenge, ensure that:
- The client has been created in the system.
- You have access to the Identity Arc feature.
- The Identity Arc library (Challenges, Goals, and Tasks) has been configured within your organization.
- The selected Challenge aligns with the client’s unique journey, needs, and circumstances or follows a standardized program workflow.
How to assign a Challenge to a client
Step 1: Navigate to the client profile
- From the left-hand sidebar, click Clients.

- Select the client you wish to assign a Challenge to by clicking their name.
- Open the Client Toolkit.

Step 2: Access Identity Arc
- Within the client profile, click the IdentityArc tab.
- The IdentityArc Assignments Dashboard will display all existing Challenges, Goals, and Tasks for the client.

Step 3: Add a new assignment
- Click + Add Assignment.

- In the assignment modal, select Challenge as the assignment type.

Step 4: Select the Challenge
- Choose the desired Challenge from the dropdown menu populated from your organization’s Identity Arc library.

- Ensure that the selected Challenge aligns with the client’s long-term objectives.
Step 5: Define the timeline
- Start Date: Select the date when the Challenge becomes active.
- End Date (Optional): Leave this field blank if the Challenge is ongoing or does not have a fixed completion date.
Step 6: Add a note for the client
If your clients have access to the mobile app, you can include a supportive note to encourage incremental behavioral changes. These notes may be:
- Motivational
- Informational
- Supportive
The note will be visible to the client within the mobile app, fostering engagement and clarity.

Step 7: Create the assignment
- Click Create Assignment to finalize the process.

- The Challenge will now appear in the client’s IdentityArc Assignments Dashboard, where its status can be monitored.
Result
Once assigned:
- The Challenge appears in the IdentityArc dashboard within the Client Toolkit.
- Service providers can monitor progress and completion status.
- The client can view the Challenge and any associated notes in the mobile app, enhancing engagement and ownership.
- The Challenge serves as the anchor for related Goals and Tasks, enabling a cohesive care plan.
Tips / Best Practices
- Align Challenges with the client’s long-term aspirations and service plan.
- Use clear and meaningful descriptions to guide future Goals and Tasks.
- Add supportive notes to encourage client engagement through the mobile app.
- Regularly review progress and update related assignments as needed.
- Ensure the Identity Arc library is configured before assigning Challenges.
